Did you know that today is National Night Out Day? Well if you didn’t – it’s a great time to ring up the gals or gents and…heat out. We don’t think there are any rules in place about what one should do so find something that makes you happy (and is legal) and go for it.
Now if you are like most people, we have a feeling you aren’t headed out with your friends tonight (because it’s a weekday and/or you are just now finding out about National Day Out). Regardless, there are still ways to have fun on short notice. So start emailing or texting your friends right now about National Night Out Day and tell them the party will be at your house. No worries – here are some easy and affordable hosting tips for a fun night in.
1.) Keep the festivities small and practical. Let’s be honest – the probability of you jet setting to Vegas on a day’s notice is quite slim. Unless you mark today’s “holiday” on your calendar for future planning, keep it simple silly. You have more resources in and around your home than you realize so use them! As this year’s National Night Out Day happens to fall on a weekday, only invite a few people to your home to keep prep and clean-up down.
2.) Homework and cocktails. Okay this may sound a little wrong, but here us out. You are a parent and unfortunately don’t have the luxury of 24/7 babysitting to go out tonight. Call up girlfriends with children (hopefully around the same age as yours) for a fun homework party! While the kiddies are studying and enjoying snacks (or pizza if you need to bribe them), enjoy a shared bottle of wine downstairs with the ladies. If you plan to make cocktails, go the virgin route.
3.) B.Y.O.B. happy hour. Bachelors and others enjoying the single life (or empty nest) can enjoy a little more spirits with a happy hour. Rather than go out and pay a $20 tab for booze, encourage your buds to bring an affordable drink of choice. In this instance, a few more guests is preferred as the more alcohol you get, the more stocked your bar will be. Always remember to supply a little food (chips, etc).
4.) Neflix anyone? Why pay double digits for a single movie when you have access to tons of films and television series? Take advantage of your online Netflix or video streaming account for a fun night in. You can provide the popcorn or let people know they should bring their own food. Suggest movie titles earlier in the day so you can have the queue loaded and ready at night.
5.) Community dinner. Cooking for unexpected guests is typically not at the top of one’s “to do” list. If you plan to have people over for National Night Out Day, commission each person to swing by their favorite take out spot for a buffet dinner. Hopefully you will get such a variety of food to make your unplanned dinner an international affair.
