Casa Basics: The ABC’s of Decorating a Home

When it comes to decorating there is not really much to it. Sure there needs to be a plan set in place, but no mathematical equations are necessary. However if you need to demystify the world of decorating then we suppose there are a few pointers you must consider. Here is our version of the ABC’s, but for decorating. Just note we didn’t get to all 26 letters.
The ABC’s of Decorating a Home
A – lways follow your heart and choose a style you can live with
B – e inspired by design inspirations around your (magazine, TV shows)
C – call in help with diy projects like painting and moving heavy furniture that require additional hands
D – on’t feel discouraged from decorating if you have a small budget. Accomplish your projects in portions
E – njoy the process because it can get stressful. Remember the outcome will be worth it
F – igure out a game plan. What room would you like to decorate first? When would you like sto start?
G – ive away or donate unused/unwanted items to those in need
H – ire a designer or decorator if your budget permits. This is a great option for those who don’t have the time or energy to complete the tasks on your own
I – magine your newly decorated interior and work to achieve it
J – ust say no to over styling. Too many accessories can kill a room and drown out the design
K – eep a design journal where you can track progress like estimated delivery dates, etc
L – et your children help decorate their room. Allow them to choose their own colors and favorite home décor
M – ake a point to keep things in your space interesting with textural elements like textile patterns, metallic and accents
N – ew furnishings are wonderful, but see if there is a way to reuse what you have before discarding it
O – pen up your heart to different styles and design palettes. Thinking outside the box may surprise you
P – lay around with room layouts until you find one that works for you
Q – uality will always trump quantity. Choose furnishings that are long-lasting and made of good materials
R – esearch licensed and quality contractors that have great referrals and years of experience
S – tick to your game plan and budget. Unforeseen changes can cause problems down the road
T – ake pictures of your decorating progress (before, during and after)
V – isit design stores and showrooms to see big-ticket items in person (looks different on the computer)
W – ork with your spouse to decorate your home. It should be a partnership not a dictatorship
Y – ou are in charge. While advice and opinions on your project are nice, stick to your taste and convictions
