This Sunday marks the beginning of the end. The end of daylight savings may promise us extra time to sleep, but it also takes away our moments with the sun. As the days start to get colder and the sun head into hibernation, we will need to find ways to stay warm. So in honor of the approaching end to daylight savings, we wanted to shine some light on how to keep your home looking and feeling warm.
4 Tips to Making Your Home Warm Post Daylight Savings
- Turn Up the Texture – Nothing says warmth quite like the use of texture. Velvet, linen (still good for fall) and wool are popular materials for decorating the home. As they provide warmth and visual weight. Incorporate them into your textiles with accent pillows, throws and window treatments.
- Trade in Cool Palette for Warmth – Blues, purples and greens are great colors for the spring and summer season, but aren’t really ideal for the fall. If you want to increase the heat in your home, do so with reds, oranges and yellows. A warm palette will excite your space while stimulating a bit of heat. For those who want to use all hues, make sure they are rich in color. Jewel tones like ruby and sapphire offer a deep color to give your interior the heaviness it needs to stay warm. Neutrals are acceptable so long as they have a little weight to them. Carmels, mochas and chocolates (see “Take a Sip of Fall with Starbucks Inspired Décor”) will keep your color palette bias while maintaining its heat.
- Let There Be Fire & Light – Don’t let the shortness of days bring down your mood. Add candles to your interiors through the use of lanterns, decorative holders or just as stand alone items. The use of a fireplace is also another great choice as fires always keep us toasty. Still need a bit more light? Switch your regular light bulbs for daylight bulbs. Not only can they help reduce eye strain, but can also mimic the intensity of natural light.
- Keep an Emergency Kit – Should there ever be a time that you or a house guest get cold, keep an emergency kit of goods. It is always a good idea to stash a couple of spare items around for the just in case. Blankets, throws and slippers can easily fit into a decorative basket. Keep them in the social areas of your home (e.g. living room, family room, den, etc.) for those cool days and chilly nights.
