Okay so most men don’t really think about planning a sports party. Beer, chips and a flat screen television are all men need to host a gathering of fellow sports fans. What happens when your in-laws come, or you decide to have your boss over for dinner? Still think beer and chips will work? There will come a time when you need to dress up your casual parties. Whether you find yourself in that category (or are looking for a few pointers), take a look at some tips on hosting a sports party.

- Create Conversations with Tables – Create different stations around your living room (or hosting space) that will spark up commercial conversation. One good way to do that is by setting up themed tables. Do you love beer? Head to the nearest wine and liquor store to pick up different beers for a tasting table. You can do the same with snacks, desserts and practically anything. This alone will help separate your party from ordinary viewing events.
- Keep the Cheesy Decorations in the Closet – There is no need to get specialty balloons and hang streamers. Your guests will only be there for a couple of hours so relax and enjoy the company. Sometimes too much is overkill.
- When in Doubt, Go with Chicken – Plan your meals ahead by asking your guests about any food restrictions and allergies. If providing home-cooked meals during the game, try a chicken dish. There are tons of simple recipes and most won’t have as many qualms eating it. Sandwiches and burgers are also safe bets as many people expect finger foods at sporting events. Still want to showcase meats and seafood? Try implementing them into your appetizers.
- Be Wise with Your Finger Foods – Chances are some of your guests will wear a nice shirt so be careful with sauces. Dips in bowls are great, but be careful not to offer super saucy (or greasy) food. Nothing says “I should have stayed home” quite like a barbecue stain that is hard to remove. If you are going to display wings and ribs, just remember to go easy on the sauce. Place nearby dishes for those who want to add a little more.
- Keep a Set of Entertainment Dinnerware – Say no to paper and foam plates by housing a stash of affordable dishes. Keep them modern and simple by going all white. Sure you will have a few left over items to wash, but your trash won’t be full of wasted plates. Our favorite places for great (and affordable barware) are CB2 and Crate and Barrel.
- Enhance Your Barware – Wow your guests with a sleek collection of modern barware. This doesn’t need to be expensive but should include a variety of glasses to accommodate beer, wine, margaritas and any other type of cocktail. Who knows, your guests may thank you for not having to drink out of a beer can.
Try to think outside the realm of pizza and kegs. Here are a few of our favorite dinnerware and recipes to help get you ready for your next sporting event.
