World Aids Day
We wanted to take time out from posting about home decor to acknowledge the HIV/AIDS epidemic. December 1st marks World AIDS Day. HIV/AIDS has been one of the biggest silent killers across the world as many people do not even know they have it. Some may never receive the care needed to combat HIV/AIDS due to lack of resources, etc. In the United States, we have a fighting chance. Get tested. Here are some statistics concerning our country and the New York City area.
- Each year, over 57,000 Americas are newly infected with HIV
- The United States Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 1/5 of HIV positive people don’t know they are infected…and may be transmitting the disease without knowing
- At least 34 states with a history of confidential name- based HIV reporting represent approximately 66% of the U.S. epidemic
“New York City remains the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S. More than 100,000 New Yorkers are living with HIV, but thousands don’t know they’re infected.”
- HIV is the 3rd leading cause of death below age 65 in New York City
- New York City has one of the highest AIDS rates in the country
