Mad Men Inspires Mod Interiors Amongst Designers

AMC’s hit television show Mad Men is a provocative show set in the 1960′s that tackles both modernity and the relationships between men and women. Each Sunday, millions of viewers tune in to see what will unfold at the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency.  Mad Men has not only captured the attention of television viewers, but also interior designers.

Mad Men set decorator Amy Wells has done a phenomenal job of capturing the design movement of the 1960′s. She creates a realistic environment that allows viewers to move through the influential era. We enjoy the decor of Mad Men because they foreshadow key design pieces often found in our modern homes.

Wells wanted to keep the set true to life and therefore nixed high priced, mid-century pieces. Nothing is over saturated items that force mid-century design down your throat. Each interior is carefully balanced with furnishings and decor that reflect the lifestyle of the characters.

Interior Designers have been glued to the television and are awed by the decor presented to them. More design professionals are using themes recalled from Mad Men and are implementing them into modern day interiors. What captures designers are the vivid colors and patterns used throughout the series. The Draper home (above) is the best example of historical accuracy. It represents a colorful image of the 1960′s with striking details that exude an authentic change in interior design.

Amy Wells brings past experience to the show. Previously working on sets for Clueless and episodes of Sex and the City, Wells offers originality and thoroughly captures the 1960′s era.
