2009 Designer Visions: John Saladino
John Saladino is a highly respected architect and designer. He is best known for mixing “old with new” and has a timless furniture line, the Saldino Furniture Collection. Veranda was very fortunate to have Mr. Saladino showcase his senority and knowledge of design at the 2009 Designer Visions. Viewers were not disappointed with their presentation of Girl with a Pearl Earring. His town house even had a model dress in the movie’s famous garbs.
Saladino wins our award for best overall design as the entire house modeled themes from the iconic movie. There was such a calming warmth throughout the house. The gray-washed wood slabs were the perfect transition around the rooms and tied in with the interior accessories. Saladino left many walls white with adjacent walls boasting texture.
The living room was simple in design and color. Modeling the garment from Girl with the Pearl Earring, the room showcased neutral hues with splashes of periwinkle blue. We did think that the quantity of seating was a bit overdone in the living area. It created a sort of maze for viewers to weave through.
The master bedroom was very simple with touches for honey and cream colors. The script art panels were an excellent touch to the room. Saladino was also the only designer who used mirroring to “extend” the room’s space. The room featured a basic wooden desk, bedside chair, and bed. By not cluttering the room with accessories and seating, Saladino was able to convey a charming quarter in its most basic state.
Perhaps simplicity was Saladino’s overall goal as his bathroom mimics that of designer Richard Mishaan. While functional, there were no touches that have not been seen or done in the industry. Simplicity was also seen in the first floor powder room as many of the walls were left white with a few photos from Girl with a Pearl Earring.
Overall, John Saladino’s town house captured Girl with a Pearl Earring wonderfully. Some critics may argue that his goal of simplicity lacked originality as it left much of the palette bare. We believe that we understand Saladino’s vision of less is more and can appreciate his contribution to the event.
